The Future of Fragrance Isn’t About Scent, It’s About Self

As women, we spend so much of our lives showing up for everyone else, but I’ve always believed that beauty should be the moment we show up for ourselves. Fragrance should have been that ritual – a small, sensory act of self-connection – yet over time, it became more about performance than presence. I’ve personally always been sensitive to fragrance—the kind that lingers in a room long after its wearer has left. For years, I avoided it altogether because it felt too heavy, too intrusive, too much. Somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t just reacting to the scent itself, but to what it represented: the idea that beauty had to announce itself to be seen. My lifelong belief that less is best has always guided me because when we strip away the excess, we make space to show up more fully. That’s why I set out to reimagine fragrance to be less about scent and more about self.

Why Traditional Fragrance No Longer Resonates

For decades, the fragrance industry has sold us the idea that scent is something you put on to become someone else, but women are no longer interested in disappearing behind an image.

We’re craving a return to ourselves, to authenticity. After all I’ve endured – the trauma, the pressure, the near losses – I certainly don’t want beauty that helps me hide. I want beauty that helps me show up.

I know I’m not alone in that sentiment, so I returned to the beauty industry to once again offer women the tools that allow them to walk into the world and kick ass, grounded in who they are. Fragrance, I’ve come to believe, can also help achieve that.

How Fragrance Affects Mood and Emotional Well-Being

Our sense of smell is the most primal of all—it’s directly wired to the limbic system, the emotional control center of the brain. That means fragrance can shape how we feel even before we realize it. Certain notes can slow the heart rate, ease stress or evoke comfort and safety. In creating No Fragrance Fragrance™, I wanted to honor that connection. We created a bottle inspired by a touchstone to incorporate into your daily ritual and help comfort you. We used adaptive technologies that interact with the skin’s natural pH, so the scent ultimately becomes you. It’s not about imposing an identity; it’s about revealing your own. It sits close to the body, almost like your shadow, designed to calm rather than overwhelm. This isn’t about the intensity of fragrance that we have all come to know and expect. This one is about intimacy and returning to yourself in an overstimulated world.

How to Use Fragrance as a Daily Self-Care Ritual

When I began writing my book We All Worry, Now What?, I noticed how often I used scent to self-soothe and come back to the present moment. That’s what I hope fragrance becomes for others: not a symbol of seduction or status, but a sensory anchor. Less about allure and more about alignment. Because if the past few years have taught us anything, it’s how fragile our peace can be, and how powerful small rituals can be in restoring it.

A New Definition of Fragrance

Scent, redefined in this way, can be our quiet companion in a noisy world—a small, steady act of self-care that helps us exhale, find our footing, and keep showing up. That’s what No Fragrance Fragrance™ represents to me: a physical embodiment of that philosophy. A companion that grounds you. A ritual that calms rather than performs. A moment to honor the essence of you.
